2. How fingerprints work
2.1 When they are computed. The SHA-256 fingerprint of each document is computed over the exact published text, in each language, at the moment of publication. Draft versions have no fingerprint.
2.2 Why. The fingerprint lets you check that the text you accepted is the text we show in our records. Our acceptance records store the document, its version and its fingerprint (Terms of Service, Section 3.3).
2.3 New versions. Every change creates a new version number, date and fingerprint. The previous version stays available.
