Compare Text Files

Marks the differences between two texts line by line, without uploading anything to a server.

    Original text

    New text

When you have two versions of the same document — a marked-up contract, an updated quote, a text someone edited — spotting the changes by eye is slow, and something always slips through. This tool compares both and marks line by line what was added and what was removed.

    How to compare two texts

    1. Load the first text

Paste the original text into the left panel or drag the file in. It opens in your browser and isn't sent anywhere.

    2. Add the second version

Do the same in the right panel with the edited file. You can mix the two: one pasted by hand, the other loaded from your computer.

    3. Review and copy the result

The differences show up instantly, line by line: what was added on one side, what was removed on the other. Review it or copy the result.

What it's good for day to day

    • A client sends the contract back with small edits and you need to see exactly what they touched before signing.
    • Someone sends you an updated quote and you want to confirm whether a price changed or only the date.
    • Two people edited the same text separately and the versions have to be merged without losing anything along the way.

    Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The comparison happens inside your browser, using your own computer's processor. The texts never travel over the internet and aren't stored anywhere: close the tab and they're gone.

Is it free, or is there a usage limit?

It's free and there's no limit on comparisons: nothing goes to a server, so there's no cost to pass on to you. We don't ask for an account or an email either. The only real limit is your computer's memory with very large texts.

What kinds of files can I compare?

Plain text files: .txt, .csv, .md, .json, .html, source code, and anything else that opens as text. A PDF or a Word file won't work directly; you'd need to copy the content first and paste it into the panels.

Do I have to install anything or sign up?

None of that is needed. Open the page and you can start comparing, on a computer or on your phone. There's no program to install, no account, no waiting in line, and no watermark on the result.

Does it catch changes within a single line?

The comparison works by lines: change one word and the whole line shows up as removed and added again. It's good for seeing what moved, but it doesn't replace a careful read when the change is a single word.
